British citizenship by Registration 

Application for registration can be made depending on various factors. There are countless circumstances under which a person may potentially qualify, many being through a parent or grandparent or colonial connection. Each situation has to be assessed individually. There are 18 main categories. Here are some of the categories through which a person may be eligible for British citizenship by registration:

  1. Birth in the UK (if born after January 1, 1983, and meeting certain residency requirements)
  2. Birth outside the UK to a British citizen parent
  3. Children of British citizens who are serving in the armed forces
  4. Citizenship through British overseas territories (BOTCs)
  5. Children born in British overseas territories
  6. Children of a British citizen parent who is a member of a British embassy or consulate
  7. People with UK-born parents but who were not automatically British citizens
  8. Persons born in the UK to non-British parents, but who are stateless
  9. Persons who have been stateless for a prolonged period
  10. Spouses or civil partners of British citizens
  11. Children of a person who was a British overseas citizen
  12. Commonwealth citizens and nationals of certain British overseas territories who have lived in the UK for a certain number of years
  13. People with certain residency rights in the UK (EU citizens post-Brexit, for example)
  14. British nationals who are nationals of a Commonwealth country and meet the requirements
  15. Children of British citizens by descent, applying to become British citizens themselves
  16. People with ancestral or colonial connections to the UK
  17. People born in former British colonies or territories
  18. People with a parent who is a British overseas citizen and who has lived in the UK for a certain time
